Does Richards Grass Fed Beef adhere to sustainable farming practices?
Yes. With a 30 to 45-day rest period between grazing, we increase the density of existing plants in our pastures and allow for the re-introduction of new native plants.
Q - Why order so much meat?
A - First of all we can assure you that in most cases people hear a quarter cow and think it will be impossible to finish. Most 4 person families finish a quarter cow in less than 4 months. By ordering more, you will save hundreds of dollars a year. Additionally, you will enjoy far better cuts of meat. Store bought grass fed Filet Mignon goes for as much as $50.00 a pound and Ribeyes for $30.00. Buying from Richards Grassfed Beef enables economies of scale not possible when buying smaller quantities.
Q - Do you offer beef year 'round?
A - Typically, we sell beef from April through early November each year, and we sell out quickly. Some beef is available all year ’round. Contact Us.
Q - Do you deliver? Where?
A - We currently are not able to make direct home deliveries. Once customers place their order we assist our customers in setting up a convenient time for pick up in Roseville, CA at Roseville Meat Company or Oakland, CA at Preferred Meats.
Q - Does Richards Grass Fed Beef offer individual cuts?
A - We have found that many of our customers are happier with the discounted rate we are capable of offering due to the size of our packages, so we have decided against selling on a per cut basis. However, very soon we will be starting to sell smaller 10 and 20 pound packages on our website. And, some of our newer partners, like Roseville Meat Company are going to carry individual cuts for retail sale. We compared the prices of various individual grass fed beef cuts with many Bay Area stores and butcher shops that sell grass fed steaks from $15.00 to as high as $50.00 per pound. Ground beef is often priced in the $7.00 to $9.00 range. By choosing Richards Grassfed Beef, you can save about 30% over what you would pay in the store.
Q - How can Richards Grassfed Beef price our product so low?
A - We run a closed operation where our animals are born and raise on our property. We don’t have to buy and sell animals except for bulls on occasion to maintain herd health. Our operation is simple.
Q - Does Richards Grassfed Beef only sell direct to customers?
A - No, we do sell wholesale through other beef suppliers, but our main operation is selling direct to consumers through our website.
Q - Do you customize orders?
A - We have fairly standard packages, each package is composed of over 55% prime cut steaks and roasts. We are willing to make small alterations to your package if our inventory allows for it. It never hurts to ask and we want to make sure you get what you are looking for. Contact Us.
Q - Do you ship orders?
A - Currently we do not ship our product, but we are investigating the possibility of starting a delivery program soon.
What is your deposit refund policy?
A - It is Richards Grassfed beef policy that all deposits are fully refundable up until two days prior to the ship date.
What is your product return policy?
A - Once full payment is received, the product is shipped. We maintain strict quality control processes during shipment and at the point of product pick up. Once the product is picked up, Richards Grassfed Beef no longer retains responsibility over the product and it's safe handling. Therefore, returns are no longer accepted after product pick up.
What is your cancellation policy?
A - Since we have to prepare, box and transport your order, cancellations are accepted prior to issuance of the final payment. We will refund your deposit in full if you cancel your order within 24 hours. Any cancellations received after 24 hours will result in a $20 restocking fee. Q - Are your animals completely grass fed?
A - Yes, our animals are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.
Q - Why eat grassfed beef?
A - Grass fed beef is high in beta-carotene, Vitamin E & B, essential Omega 3 fatty acids, Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), and Trans Vaccenic Acid (TVA). Because grass fed animals are naturally leaner, the beef is also lower in cholesterol and calories than commercially raised corn fed beef. Eating grass fed beef is the right decision for your health & the health of your family!
Studies show that grass-fed cattle also have dramatically fewer E. coli in their intestines than grain fed cattle. Grain fed cattle develop abnormally high stomach acidity, which allows for the development of acid-resistant E. coli. Grass fed cattle have healthy stomach acidity, which means that even if by rare chance you are exposed to E. coli, your stomach’s natural acidity should kill the bacteria. Please note that despite the health of our animals, we always recommend the proper storage, handling and cooking of meat.
Q - Are the cattle finished with grain?
A - No. From the moment our animals are weaned from their mothers, they consume high quality grass for the rest of their lives.
Q - Are you certified grass fed beef?
A - Richards Grassfed Beef is certified by the American Grassfed Association as 100% grass fed beef.
Q - How long is your beef aged?
A - Per USDA, our beef is dry aged for 21 days to allow natural enzymes to breakdown the hard connective tissue in the meat, and to allow for water to evaporate and to concentrate the flavor.
Q - How is the meat prepared and packaged?
A - The meat is cut and vacuum packed in see-through packages. This airless environment ensures high quality and a long shelf life in your freezer.
The USDA does not put a shelf life on flash frozen vacuum sealed meat. However for the highest quality flavor we suggest it be finished in 1 year.
Q - How long will the beef last in the refrigerator?
A - In general, we say three to five days maximum in the refrigerator.
Q - If I don't have a stand-alone freezer, what size package should I purchase?
A - We recommend our Eighth packages, you should be able to use the space you have in your regular freezer, provided it is not full of other items.
Be sure to freeze your meat as soon as it arrives to keep it fresh, or refrigerate any portions you will use within two days.
Q - It is best to thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator?
A - Using this method, a one-pound package will thaw in approximately 20 to 24 hours. We do not recommend thawing meat in the microwave. However, if you must, select the lowest power setting to avoid cooking, rather than defrosting, the meat.

Q - What is CLA?
A - Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is fatty acid that is produced naturally in the bodies of grass-fed animals and is found in their meat and milk. Grass-fed cattle are likely to have two to three times the amount of CLA as grain-fed animals, and this nutritional value is passed on to you when you eat grass-fed meat. Research shows that a diet rich in CLA can help reduce a person’s risk of cancer, arteriosclerosis, and diabetes.
